This girl's pink dress clearly shows its construction details. the bodice is cut from a single piece of fabric, folded at shoulder and the side seam sewn. Notice that the sleeves are not sewn to the bodice, they were cut as one piece with it. The waistline is a corded hem of the bodice, to which the skirt is cartridge pleated. Ribbon trim was used to make a linear decoration at sleeves and hem. A lace petticoat shows beneath the skirt.

Sisters in plaid

These two wealthy sisters appear to be from the 1860s. They are wearing identical dresses cut from the same bolt of silk plaid.

The dresses have an elaborately cut flounce on the skirt. They appear to be worn with a small hoop skirt. The detailing on the bodice is unusual, with saw-tooth edges that are overcast. Embroidered cuff details are apparent. The dresses have thin band collars.

The girls are wearing rather high boots with black button side closures and white stockings.
